The Windows Spotlight feature is designed to refresh your lock screen wallpaper daily with stunning images. When it gets stuck on a single image, it means the system's cache is corrupted or the feature has failed to properly register. Follow these steps to force the feature to reset and download new images.

Step 1: Switch to a Different Lock Screen Setting
You must temporarily disable the Spotlight feature before clearing its files.
- Go to Settings (Windows Key + I) > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under "Personalize your lock screen," change the setting from Windows spotlight to Picture or Slideshow.
- Restart your PC to ensure the change takes effect and clears the current lock screen session.
Step 2: Delete the Spotlight Image Cache
The core of the issue is often a corrupted or outdated cache file that tells Windows which image to display.
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the following folder (replace USERNAME with your actual Windows username):
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\Settings - In this folder, you will see two files: roaming.lock and settings.dat.
- Delete both files. This forces Windows to create fresh settings the next time the feature runs.
Step 3: Re-Register Windows Spotlight via PowerShell
This command re-initializes the Content Delivery Manager responsible for the Spotlight images.
- Search the Start Menu for PowerShell, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Copy and paste the following command entirely and press Enter:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers *ContentDeliveryManager* | foreach {Add-AppxPackage "$($_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode -register } - Wait for the command to execute (there might be a brief delay or no output).
Step 4: Check Windows Update and Time Settings
A mismatch in time or pending updates can prevent the feature from connecting to Microsoft servers to download new content.
- Go to Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
- Ensure that Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically are both On.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and ensure your system is fully up to date.
Step 5: Re-Enable Spotlight and Test
After performing the resets, switch the feature back on and check the lock screen.
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Change the setting back to Windows spotlight.
- Lock your PC (Windows Key + L) and wait a few moments. The lock screen should display a new image.
Note: It can sometimes take up to 24 hours for the new image download cycle to fully normalize after a manual reset.
